Secondary, High Temperature Battery Based on
Alkali Metal β"-Alumina Solid Electrolyte (BASE)

MSRI is developing high temperature (400 to 650oC), planar, secondary batteries based on alkali metal beta” alumina solid electrolyte (BASE) in collaboration with the University of Utah. MSRI has successfully fabricated Na-BASE and K-BASE discs and tubes using MSRI’s patented vapor phase process and identified suitable electrochemical couples capable of delivering high specific energies. Planar cells have been designed and constructed. Cell performance has been evaluated.
